Energy security continues to be one of the most pressing issues in international relations, with countries and organizations constantly seeking ways to improve cooperation in this vital sector. In this context, the latest report from the Data Diplomacy Academy, "Fostering (and understanding) energy cooperation through data diplomacy and how to improve it: a brief study on the UN Treaty Series online", sheds new light on the role of data diplomacy in enhancing global energy cooperation.
Authored by Pascoal Gonçalves, Henry Iure Paiva, and Renan Montenegro, the report offers a data-driven exploration of international energy agreements, drawing on the United Nations Treaty Series Online (UNTS) to analyze treaties and acts signed between 1946 and 2024.
Among its key findings, the report emphasizes the prominence of bilateral agreements in shaping energy diplomacy, highlights the enduring relevance of nuclear issues in international treaties, and discusses the significant role of data diplomacy in improving transparency and cooperation within the energy sector.
"Fostering (and Understanding) Energy Cooperation through Data Diplomacy" is part of a broader effort to advance research in energy security and international cooperation. The report is the second of a series of reports published by the Data Diplomacy Academy as part of its Research and Knowledge Generation activities. It is freely available on the Data Diplomacy Academy platform, and custom reports can be requested for more in-depth analysis. Find out more here.
